Karla Marie Jones

Jones, Karla

Karla Marie Jones was born in Beeville, Texas on January 2, 1978.  She was the first girl of the new year.  Karla left this earth to be with God and Jesus on July 27, 2014.  Karla loved people and enjoyed visiting, laughing, creating art work and being there for others. She was an honor graduate from TMHS and earned her associate degree of Registered Nursing from Del Mar College.  Karla’s purpose in this life was to help others and she did this best when she was taking care of the sick.  Even before she was a nurse she helped care for her Nana and PoePoe as they died from cancer.  She is survived by her father and step mom, Craig and Angie Jones, her grandparents Don & Claudine Jones, her sister, Stacie Jones, nephews Sean & Keith, her “sister from another mother” Kristen Hovda Shepard, she was an honorary family member of  Allen & Debby Hovda.  Her Uncle Kerry & Angela Jones, Aunt Sharon Jones, Aunt Hope and Jim Driskill and all her cousins, Step Grandfather Roy Bertram. Her mother Sandra Heinen and her friend Kevin Tyler.  Waiting on the other side for her were her grandparents, Johnnie and Betty Heinen, her uncles Keith Jones and David Heinen, and many saints that are enjoying Karla’s beautiful laugh and smile, May they all rest in peace until we meet again. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home.Funeral Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel.

David Helpenstell

Helpenstell, David

David Helpenstell, 78, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2014. He was born in Frankston, Texas to William J. Helpenstell and Savanna Owens Helpenstell. He graduated from Harleton High School after which he attended Kilgore College and continued on to Texas A & M University graduating in 1960 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering.

His career included early work as a Senior Engineering Assistant with the Texas Highway Department; five years with the Corpus Christi division of Lockwood, Andrews and Newnam, Inc. as a Project Engineer; two years with Suntide Refinery Company as Lead Mechanical Engineer; seven years as the Senior Civil Engineer for the Port of Corpus Christi; and more than 20 years as a Senior Civil/Structural/Mechanical Engineer with BHP Engineering & Construction LP.

He was very active in the First United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi. He was a hard worker, a believer in lifelong learning, an avid outdoors-man, and a loving family man.

David was preceded in death by his father, William J. Helpenstell.

He is survived by his mother, Savanna Owens Helpenstell; his wife, Sylvia Helpenstell; his children, Keith Helpenstell, Terri Helpenstell, Michael Dobson (Caroline), Mark Dobson (Misty); Stephanie Cronk (Caleb); and his grandchildren Alexa and Aiden Dobson.

Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Sawyer-George Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church on Shoreline Drive.

Interment will be on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at the Laneville Cemetery in Laneville, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s name to the Wesley Community Centers of Nueces County or Heifer International.

J. R. “Reggie” Ballew

Bellew, J. R.

J. R. “Reggie” Ballew, 74, of Corpus Christi, Texas passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014.  He was born March 13, 1940 in Howe, Texas to John Sadler Ballew and Bessie Mae Wiggins Ballew.  He was retired from CP&L/AEP after 41 years of service.  Reggie was a member of Abundant  Life Fellowship Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Ballew of Corpus Christi, Texas; his daughters, Bridgette (Charles) Vieh of San Benito, Texas, and Amanda (Steve) Mc Clure of Corpus Christi, Texas; his son, John Ballew of Corpus Christi, Texas; 8 grandchildren, A. J., Jenna, Crystal, Alaida, Stephanie, Justin, Arden and Jadyn; 7 great grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 2 P.M. Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Abundant Life Fellowship, 9550 Leopard Street, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 P.M. Sunday at Abundant Life Fellowship  with Pastor Rick Milby officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10 A.M. Monday, August 4, 2014 at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steve McClure, Charles Vieh, Artie Swails, Matt Snyder, Tim Ashley and Bert Quintanilla.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Wayne Wright, David Glenn, Kit Silver and Gary Vaughn.

Erma Klinedinst Calahan

Calahan, Erma

Erma Klinedinst Calahan passed away on Friday, July 25, 2014 at the age of 92.  Erma Iona was born in Tyner, Indiana on August 6, 1921 to Joseph and Ethel Klinedinst.  She was sixth of nine children and lost her mother to an illness when Erma was nine years old.  She was a graduate of Edwardsburg High School in Edwardsburg, Michigan.  Erma put herself through nursing school and became a registered nurse after graduating from St. Joseph Hospital Nursing School in Mishawaka, Indiana. During World War II, Erma joined the Navy in January, 1944.  She was stationed at Great Lakes, Illinois and NAS Corpus Christi, Texas as a Navy nurse.  She was honorably discharged December 25, 1945 with the rank of Lt. JG.  While stationed at NAS Corpus Christi, Erma met Navy Seaman James Doyle Calahan from Kopperl, Texas and they were married August 15, 1945.  Jim gave her the nickname of “Browneyes”.  After they were both discharged from the Navy, they made their home in Corpus Christi.  While busy raising two girls and two boys, Erma also managed to provided ten years of nursing at P & S Hospital (head nurse first floor) and worked several years as an office nurse for Dr. Snook as well as for Dr. William Swan.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jim, in 1983, her brothers, Lester Klinedinst,  Dale Klinedinst, Forest “Fritz” Klinedinst, Herb Klinedinst, Alfred Klinedinst, Richard “Dick” Klinedinst, Robert “Bob” Klinedinst and her sister, Betty Rader.

Erma is survived by her two daughters, Kathy (Ralph) Lesmeister of Odem, Texas and Lois (James) Burnip of Alice, Texas, her two sons, James (Pauline) Calahan of Corpus Christi, Texas and Joe (Debbie) Calahan of Robstown, Texas, nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, and two half  brothers, Brent Klinedinst of Ludowici, Georgia, and David Klinedinst of Mediapolis, Iowa.  Erma also leaves behind many other family members and friends.

Visitation will be from 2 P.M. until 8 P.M. with the family present from 6 P.M. until 8 P.M. Tuesday, July 29, 2014 in Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Robert Simmons officiating.  Burial will follow in Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons; Darren Lesmeister, Joe Calahan, Jr., Michael Calahan, Dean Hatch, Robby Winstead, Robert Pennington. Matt Richmond and Erik Halvorsen.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Robert Lee Guerrero, Sr.

Robert Lee Guerrero, Sr., age 55, of Seabrook, Texas passed away July 23, 2014.

He was born in Robstown, Texas on September 30, 1958 to Alvino and Rosa Guerrero.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce and a sister, Eloisa Alvarado.

Robert is survived by his mother, Rosa Guerrero; his children, Yvette and George Schmidt, Robert and Jillie Guerrero, Matthew Guerrero; brother, Hector Guerrero; sisters, Corina Guerrero, Mina Guerrero, Louisa Evans; two grandchildren, Tristin and Gabriel Guerrero.

The Rosary will be recited on Monday July 28, 2014 at 7:00 P.M. in the Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Peter, Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church with Rev. Emilio Jimenez as celebrant.

Interment will follow in the Rose Hill Memorial Park.
