George D. Shaffer

Shaffer, George

George D. Shaffer of Corpus Christi, Texas passed away quietly at home on March 29, 2017. He was born June 29, 1929 in Oil City, Pennsylvania.  After graduating from Texas A&I Kingsville, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served four years in the Korean Conflict.  When he returned to Texas he worked his way through law school.  He received his Juris Doctorate from South Texas College of Law in 1967 and returned to Corpus Christi to open his practice.  He had practiced law for 50 years right up until weeks before his death.  He was active in Oil Belt Little League with his sons, enjoyed bowling for many years and loved traveling with his family.  He served as Nueces County Commissioner of Precinct 1 from 1989 to 1992 and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Vance D. Shaffer and Erma Shaffer; his sister, Mary Lorenz; sister-in-law, Lillian Shaffer; father-in-law, Cliff Landen; and brother-in-law, Mark Landen.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, April; his two sons, Ty Shaffer (Kandy) of Natalia, Texas and Ky Shaffer of San Antonio, Texas; two grandchildren, Samantha Shaffer and Cody Shaffer; brothers, Vance W. Shaffer, Dale Shaffer (Shirley) and Robert Shaffer; brother-in-law, Don Lorenz; sister-in-law, Marilyn Landen; mother-in-law, Gloria Landen; and many nieces and nephews.

George loved people, loved the law, but most of all he loved his family. He was a wonderful husband, a great dad and a very proud grandfather.  His quick wit and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be at Sawyer-George Funeral Home on Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 4 P.M. until 6 P.M.

Funeral services will be conducted at Grace United Methodist Church, 14521 Northwest Boulevard on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 10 A.M. with burial to follow in Seaside Cemetery. The Rev. Jason Fry will officiate.

The family wishes to thank Christus Spohn Home Health Care and Angel Bright Hospice for the wonderful care they provided.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in George’s honor be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 14521 Northwest Boulevard, Corpus Christi, Texas 78410.

Shawn Adam Wilkey

Shawn Adam Wilkey, 24, gained his Heavenly wings on Thursday, March 30, 2017 with his parents by his side. Born on May 4, 1992 to Jimmy and Margaret Wilkey in Corpus Christi, Texas as a special needs angel, he spent many days at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.  Shawn and his parents never settled for what the doctors said that he would be able to do.  He endured many surgeries and continued to strive until 2014 when he caught a virus that placed him in a wheelchair.  He struggled from that point on and never was able to return to walking.  Due to a long and strong process to cure a staph infection, it broke his body down that weakened him to a point of no return.

A graduate of Tuloso-Midway High School in 2014, he enjoyed participating in Special Olympics and received many medals in bowling, track and field, swimming and basketball.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Charles Herschback, Sr.

He is survived by his parents, Jimmy and Margaret (Herschback) Wilkey; two brothers, Louis (Katie) and Christian; niece, Raylin; nephew, Ryder; best friend, Erik Thomas; great grandpa, Milton (Nancy) Miller; paternal grandparents, Jim and Pearl Wilkey and Irma and Mike Spaulding; maternal grandmother, Sue Herschbach; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A very special thank you to his nurses and therapist that have been caring for him for the past three years, we will be forever indebted to you for your compassion. We would also like to thank each and everyone that helped/contributed in any way to Shawn’s benefits and to the Go Fund Me Account.

Visitation will be from 2 P.M. until 7 P.M. with the family present from 5 P.M. until 7 P.M. Monday, April 3, 2017 in Sawyer-George Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 A.M. Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Annaville Baptist Church, 4025 Violet Road, Corpus Christi, Texas, with Bro. Robert Simmons and Bro. Ronnie Watson officiating.

Ninfa Nava Ochoa

Ninfa Nava Ochoa went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday March 27. She was born on November 12, 1923, in Kingsville, Texas. She was a mother and grandmother who cherished precious moments with her family. She was a home-maker all her life and enjoyed gardening, baking, and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel B. Ochoa, son Robert Ochoa, parents Francisco and Josefa Nava, brothers Robert Nava, Horacio Nava, Rojelio Nava, Fidel Nava, and grand-daughters Delinda Vorvette, and Natalie Jo Flores.

She is survived by her brothers Genaro Nava, El Monte, California and Raul Nava, San Antonio, Texas; sons Daniel Ochoa (Yolanda), Richard Ochoa (Mary Alice), Frankie Ochoa (Emma Chapa) and daughter Berta Flores, all of Corpus Christi, Texas; eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm with a Rosary to follow at 7:00 pm on Thursday March 30, 2017 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel, 12497 Leopard Street, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Friday March 31, 2017 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 710 S. 19th St., Corpus Christi, Texas.

Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

Pallbearers are Richard Ochoa, Pete Flores, Michael Flores, Richard Dean Ochoa, James Daniel Gongora, and Rachel Flores.

Maria Odelia Olszewski


On Friday, March 24, 2017, after a long, courageous battle with cancer; Maria Odelia Olszewski (Odie-60) was called home to be with the Lord.

She is proceeded in death by her father, Alvino Guerrero, Sisters, Eloisa Alvarado and Corina Guerrero. Brother and Sister in law, Robert and Joyce Guerrero and niece Nadia Guerra.

She is survived by her mother, Rosa Guerrero; Sister, Louisa (Pete) Evans; Brother, Hector (Elizabeth) Guerrero; daughters, Jaclyn (Eric) Chapa and Erika Wright; son, Oscar(Madeline) Olszewski III; 10 Grandchildren, Joshua Diaz, Jonathan Diaz, Desirae Wright, Brandin Perales, Jiovanni Diaz, Olivia Perales, Jayden Diaz, Isys Wright, Amaris Wright and Baby Olszewski and her nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel with a rosary recited at 7:00pm.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, March 27, 2017 at St Peter Prince, of the Apostle Catholic Church.

Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Robstown.

Cori Elaine Forbes

ForbesCori Elaine Forbes, age 38, of Corpus Christi, Texas passed away March 14, 2017.

Cori was born October 23, 1978 in Corpus Christi, Texas to Charles C. Forbes and Janet Brown Forbes.

She is survived by her mother, Janet Forbes; father, Charles C. Forbes; grandmother, Elaine Brown; brother, Charlie (Katie) Forbes; sister, Cristine (Bert) Gamez and Cameron Forbes.

Her main joy in her life were her nieces and nephews, Brent, Brooke, Rilyn, Drayson and Blake Gamez, Charles VI, Cody, Carsen Forbes.

Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel.
