Andrew Sterling "Bill" Price, Jr., 94, longtime resident of Robstown, Texas, passed peacefully from this earth to his heavenly home at 8:20 P.M. on February 11, 2011. At the time of his parting, Bill was surrounded by friends and loved ones at his home in Houston, Texas, where he had resided for the past several years. Bill was born in Skidmore, Texas on January 12, 1917, the youngest of five children. His parents were Andrew Sterling Price, Sr. and Bernice Williamson Price. Bill was a proud Texan his entire life. He was named after his great uncle, Sterling Price, a highly esteemed General in the Confederate Army, his grandfather, Andrew J. Price, owner of Barnard's Mill in Glen Rose, Texas, and his father, Andrew Sterling Price, Sr., a fine and hardworking pharmacist from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. After graduating from high school in Laredo, Bill attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy. He began his career as a pharmacist, going to work at City Drug Store in Robstown. Then he was called into the service of his country, where he served for five years in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Bill completed two tours of duty in Puerto Rico, during which time he earned three medals for his distinguished service to his beloved country. Then in 1944, he returned to civilian life to pursue his career as a pharmacist in South Texas. Not many years later, he was a partner in ownership and operating the City Drug Store in Robstown, Texas. For many years, City Drug Store was a part of the heart and soul of life in Robstown! One of the very cornerstones of business life in a thriving and prosperous farming community, City Drug was famous for its old fashioned soda fountain, beautiful gifts, as well as the properly filled prescriptions, scrupulous attention to detail and customer satisfaction. During his thirty years at City Drug Store, he became a much beloved figure in the community, not only working tirelessly at City Drug to meet the needs of customers and employees, but he also sat on the board of City Councilmen of Robstown for many years. He retired from City Drug in 1984. In 1968 he married Ruth Grover Schanen with whom he spent 35 happy years. They were faithful members of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Robstown. Bill is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his father, A. S. Price, Sr.; his mother, Bernice Price; brothers, Melville and A. J. Price; his sisters, Bernice Leach and Joyce Renfrow; sisters-in-law, Mable Emmert, Louise Herring, Lucille Morse and Maudie Belle Chighizola; brothers-in-law, Delmo Grover and Eddie Grover; nephew, Larry Maloy; great grandson, Ryan Vandivier. Mr. Price is survived by his stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Bobby and Sandy Schanen and Glynn and Linda Schanen; grandsons, Rob Schanen and his wife, Shana, Scott Schanen and his wife Lisa, Dean Schanen and his wife Amber; granddaughters, Leslie Vandivier and her husband, Kevin, Amy Thomas and her husband Steve; great grandsons, Sean Cook, Shannon Vandivier, Austin Schanen, Connor Schanen and Aaron Thomas; great granddaughters, Kaitlin Vandivier, Kelly Vandivier, Skylar Schanen, Kathryn Schanen and Elizabeth Schanen. Bill is also survived by a niece, Charlotte Huber and husband Bob and many other loving and much loved nieces and nephews, loved family and friends of all ages. Bill Price will be remembered as a true southern gentleman, a man of great kindness, wisdom, courage and integrity. Bill has left behind a legacy of love here on earth and he will be deeply missed. The Rosary will be recited at 7 P.M. Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 A.M. Friday, February 18, 2011 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Robstown with Rev. Tom Showalter as celebrant. Burial will follow in Robstown Memorial Park with military honors.
