Daniel Carrell Havel

Daniel Carrell Havel, 80, of Portland, Texas, passed away on June 3, 2026, following a short but courageous battle with Stage 4 lung cancer.

Daniel was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, on October 8, 1945, to Benjamin A. Havel and Wilma Havel. He was a 1964 graduate of W.B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. He earned an associate degree from Del Mar College.

Daniel proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1965-1969 and was a Vietnam Veteran. Following his military service, he worked at the Corpus Christi Army Depot, where he dedicated many years of service and retired in 2004.

Daniel enjoyed spending time at his ranch with family, hunting, listening to Elvis Presley, and indulging in his favorite sweet snacks. He was happiest when surrounded by those he loved, creating memories that will be treasured for generations. Daniel was known for his positive outlook on life and his ever-present smile. He was always happy, always encouraging, and always able to find the good in any situation. His grandchildren lovingly called him “Pops,” a title he cherished deeply, while many of his friends affectionately knew him as “Dan the Man.” He was truly the best. Anyone who had the privilege of meeting Daniel could attest to that. He was kind, strong, loving, funny, and the very definition of a role model. His devotion to his family, his generosity toward others, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He also had a special love for his faithful dog, Luke.

He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Havel; his mother, Wilma Havel; his twin brother, Randall Havel; and his father, Benjamin Havel.

Daniel is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Karla Havel; his children, Jonathan Havel, Susan Lofland (Kyle), and Stacy Gros (John); his grandchildren, Alyssa Cobb, Taylor Lofland, Morgan Havel, Jared Lofland, Gavin Klaus, Kayden Klaus, and Kendall Klaus; his great-grandchildren, James Cobb and Hallie Havel; and his niece and nephew, Sheree Bottorff and Jason Havel.

Daniel will be remembered for his positivity, his devotion to family, his service to his country, and the countless memories made with those he loved most. Whether he was spending time with family, listening to Elvis, enjoying the outdoors, riding his golf cart, or sharing a laugh with friends, Daniel made every moment brighter for those around him.

While his family mourns his loss, they also celebrate a life exceptionally well lived. His love, laughter, wisdom, and example will continue to guide and inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of kindness, strength, humor, and unconditional love will live on through all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at Sawyer-George Funeral Home, 12497 Leopard St., Corpus Christi, TX 78410, on June 23, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. and Burial services with military honors will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi, Texas.

“Pops” will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
