Edythe Young

February 5, 1938 — November 6, 2018

Edythe Elizabeth Daley Young (Edie) entered into the Kingdom of Heaven on the eve of All Saints Day after a long illness. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her Southern hospitality and loving spirit were magnetic. She was loved by everyone who ever had the privilege of knowing her on a personal level. Her Catholic faith ran deep, once contemplating a sister life in the convent. Edythe was born on February 5th, 1938 in Summit, Mississippi to Tobias Daley and Sarah Garner. She spent a short time in Detroit, Michigan but was drawn back to the small-town Southern charm of her native Columbia, Mississippi where she could be close to her mother, brothers and sisters, those of whom she deeply loved and cherished. Edythe was a phenomenal Southern style cook, making scratch recipes passed down from her mother, Sarah, including her specialties, homemade biscuits and tomato gravy, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and homemade cream gravy, meatloaf topped with peas and mashed potatoes, fried catfish, salmon patties and many others. She loved cooking and despised the thought of anyone going hungry. Edie would cook for an army even though she may only be feeding a few, and she would always offer (those sharing her table) samples of food from her plate. She also loved to fish and cherished times while accompanying her grandson Timmy at their favorite fishing holes. On May 6th, 1961 she married the love of her life, a handsome Marine whom she'd met while working as a waitress at a diner in Gretna, Louisiana. Herbert, also a small-town native Mississippian (Crystal Springs), shared her Southern charm and was a perfect match. Herb and Edie eventually moved to Texas where they planted their roots and raised a family. Edythe longed for the day she would reunite with Herb, and they are together once again in God's Heavenly Kingdom. Edythe is proceeded in the heavenly afterlife by her husband of fifty years, Herbert Young, her mother, Sarah Garner, her father, Tobias Daley, and her loving brother-in-law, James Greer. She is survived by her children, Robert Metcalfe Young, Michelle Elizabeth Young Evans (Roy), Kimberly Young (Jay Charles) and Michael Young (Jo Ann), her grandchildren, Lonnie Burnside, Eric Burnside, Kenneth Burnside (Rebekah), Jacob Burnside, all of Austin, Texas and Timothy Evans of Petronilla, Texas. sisters Ruth Daley Greer, Brenda Norris Hibley, brothers, Jarome Daley (Merle), Dan Daley (Ronelda), Jim Daley (Lil), Lavelle Daley (Laura), and Carey Daley. Services will be held at Sawyer-George funeral home in Calallen, Texas on Saturday, November 10th, 2018 at ten in the morning with Eluterio Farias of Saint Peter, Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church officiating, followed by a Celebration of Life with family and close friends at the VFW, also in Calallen. Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.           .
