Giovanna Hewitt

September 3, 2010 — September 6, 2010

Our dearest Mother, Grandmother, and Sister, Giovanna Glenn Hewitt, went to meet her Lord and Savior and be reunited with her loving husband Lew, on September 3, 2010. During her life, Giovanna was a loving presence and inspiration to her family and everyone who knew her. She was generous and kind, with a fun-loving spirit and a compassionate heart. She was devoted to — and so proud of — her family. She made the Hewitt home a happy haven, where family and friends were always welcomed with open arms and unconditional love. She found a way and the time to nurture and take care of everybody! A lovely lady, always immaculately dressed, Giovanna had a creative soul and the vision of an artist. She saw beauty and the potential for beauty in everything. She took joy and delight in small things: the dew on a spider web, pennies on the ground, and even birds on a wire. Giovanna was driven to create, and always had one — or ten — projects in progress to feed that creative nature. She was a self-taught cook, hostess, musician, seamstress, and artist. She could prepare dinner for an army, then serve it piping hot and delicious, and always on beautiful china and crystal. Events at the Hewitt household were legendary: wonderful company, interesting topics, fantastic food. No matter who you were, you were welcome at Giovanna's table and in her home, and somehow there was always more than enough food and truly genuine fellowship. Giovanna played the accordion, piano, and served as organist at Gardendale Baptist Church for 25 years. She also sang, often substituting as tenor in the men's quartet. Giovanna could sew anything, with or without a pattern! She started making dresses for her baby girls in the ‘50s and never stopped. She made original and stunning wedding dresses for her daughters and grand-daughters; holiday dresses for her grand-daughters in matching fabrics but different styles; and even sewed 50 dresses in different styles, sizes, and fabrics, which were taken to a mission school for girls in Mexico. Giovanna produced an amazing number of striking needle point pictures, framed photos, and copper wire art of sailing ships, musical instruments, and corporate logos. These cherished artworks live on, and many grace the homes of her children, grandchildren, and friends. They are daily reminders of her artistry, love, and desire to create something beautiful. Giovanna was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She leaves behind two sons and four daughters: David Hewitt and wife Nanci; Danny Hewitt and wife Vicki; Susie Heath; Gini Stowe Sanders; Cindy and husband Tom Sultenfuss; Giovanna Hewitt and fiancé Chuck Roylston; eight grandsons and six granddaughters: Kim and husband Mike Fegan, Brandon Hewitt and fiancé Becky, Kelly and Courtney Hewitt; Brad Hewitt and wife Rebecca, Scott Hewitt and wife Lisa, Reed Hewitt and wife Liz; Jason Poindexter, Julie and husband Chad Crawford, Kaley Heath; Dustin Sultenfuss and fiancé Alexis, Nick Floyd; Lauren and husband Matt Carter, and Dillon Hewitt-Castillo; four great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters: Tyler Lewis and Mikeala Giovanna Fegan; Noah and Lily Hewitt; Elijah Hewitt; and Jackson Crawford; two sisters and one brother: Arlette Thomas, Janice McDearman and husband Jack, Ardel Nolte; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Giovanna was preceded in death by her father Leo Nolte, brother Aldine, mother Toni Tutwiler, and her devoted husband, Lew. The family would like to thank the caregivers and nurses at the Holmgreen Center for their loving treatment of Giovanna. Special thanks to our adopted sister and angel, Gini Stowe Sanders, for the joy, laughter, and love she brought into Giovanna's life on a daily basis. And very special thanks to Danny and Vicki Hewitt, who have proven over and over again that there are saints on earth, through their compassion, devotion, love, and sacrifice in service of Mom and her care. Thank you, Mom, for your unconditional love, and for teaching us how to use our hearts and see the wonder, beauty, and joy in small and simple things.
