He was one of four children, alongside his siblings Candelario, Virginia, and George. At the young age of 17, Gonzalo enlisted in the United States Navy, beginning a life of service to his country. He also served during the Vietnam War, playing an important role in providing supplies to support operations. In addition to his time in the Navy, Gonzalo also served in the United States Air Force, demonstrating his deep commitment and dedication.

Above all, he cherished time spent with his family. Whether visiting with relatives, reminiscing with cousins, or sharing stories, those moments meant the most to him.
Gonzalo was also a cancer survivor, a testament to his strength and resilience. Later in life, he devoted himself to caring for his father until his passing, showing the depth of his love and loyalty to his family.
