Herbert Young

December 12, 1939 — August 12, 2010

Herbert Clyde Young, husband, father, brother, and friend, died Wednesday August 12, 2010. He was 70. Herbert was born to Floyd and Gladys Marie (Barlow) Young on December 12, 1939 in Crystal Springs, MS. He joined the Marines in 1957 at the age of 17 where he served his country at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. After satisfying a four-year military duty, he began a long career in the oilfield, beginning as a roughneck and later transitioning to his role as a fishing tool consultant. He worked for a time in Louisiana but it wasn't long before he was drawn to the bustling oilfields of South Texas. Upon recommendation from his employer for his outstanding work ethic, Herbert was presented with a new opportunity to work as a shop hand with a small oilfield company in Victoria. He quickly accepted the new role and moved his family there. It was then that he began a life long career in the down hole fishing tool business while working with Mr. Rodney Baker of Baker Fishing Tools. Herbert read every book he could get his hands on to learn the fishing tools trade and he quickly worked his way into the role of a consultant. He would eventually become one of the most well respected consultants in the industry by his peers and business colleagues. He was loved by many and will be forgotten by none. His heart was as big as Texas. He is preceded in death by both of his parents, a brother, David Barlow, and long time friend and business associate, Charlie Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Edythe Young of Corpus Christi, Texas; son, Robert Young Metcalfe (Melissa) of Austin, Texas; daughters, Michelle Burnside (Wesley) of Petronilla, Texas, Kimberly Young of Houston, Texas and son, Michael Young (Jo Ann) of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Imo Jean McClure of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Sue Menninger of Jackson, Mississippi, and Ann Whitney of Lakeland, Florida; five grandchildren, Lonnie Burnside, Eric Burnside, Jacob Burnside, Kenneth Burnside, and Timothy Evans, and numerous nieces and nephews and friends. Honorary pallbearers are Chuck Johnson, Benny Motes, Arthur Potter, Sandy Tullis, Don Hansen, Malcolm DeShields, Joe Anderson, Houston Carver, Harry Rychetsky, Mike Marion, and Wesley Evans. A Memorial Service will be conducted on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at the Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Msgr. Morgan Rowsome officiating. Family and friends will gather at Lou's Saloon following the services where Herb spent many good times with good friends. In lieu of flowers, an account has been established for donations in the names of Arbor Day Foundation or the Make a Wish Foundation at the First State Bank of Odem.
