Obituary for Johnny James Wilkey, Sr.

Johnny James Wilkey, Sr., 93, of Berclair, Texas, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025, at his home with his children by his side. Born on June 22, 1932, in Corpus Christi, Texas, he was the son of Edwin and Ethel Wilkey.

Johnny grew up in a large, close-knit family. He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Edward, Laveda, and Lois. He is survived by his sister Norma and brother Jimmy, both of whom he cared for deeply throughout his life.

He is also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally Wilkey, with whom he shared a long and faithful marriage. Together they raised a family that remained his greatest joy. Johnny is survived by his children: Johnny Wilkey, Jr., Rick Wilkey, Teresa Gernandt (Dale), Kathy Larson (Steve), and Jeremy Wilkey (Chrystal). Though Rick’s wife, Ronda, passed before him, she remained a cherished part of the family’s story.

Johnny took immense pride in his expanding family. He leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him joy, purpose, and laughter.

A proud American, Johnny served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War. His work ethic and resilience marked every chapter of his life. After returning home, he built a distinguished career as a brick mason, cement mason, and General Foreman at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. Upon retirement, he embraced the life of a cattle rancher, tending the land he loved with the same commitment he brought to every endeavor.

Johnny was a man of remarkable skill and curiosity. Whether it was hunting, fishing, woodworking, leather crafting, or winemaking, he approached every interest with talent, patience, and natural excellence. Whatever he set his hands to, he mastered—and delighted in sharing those creations with others. More than anything, Johnny lived a life of service, kindness, and quiet generosity. Nearly everyone who knew him has a story of a time he stepped in to help—often without being asked, always without expecting anything in return. He had a warm sense of humor, a steady presence, and a deep desire to keep his family close and grounded in love.

In his later years, Johnny experienced a gentle transformation of faith, finding peace, comfort, and renewed hope in God. His determination, love for life, and devotion to family never diminished. He cared for his siblings, his children, and countless others with unwavering loyalty. His life was marked by purpose, compassion, and the kind of strength that leaves a legacy far beyond one lifetime.

Johnny’s loved ones take comfort knowing that he has been reunited with Sally and many members of his family, resting now in the promise of God’s eternal care.
