Kenneth Alex Nugent (Kenny) was the first-born son to Alex and Margaret Nugent, on November 2, 1953. The Nugents proudly brought him to their home on Lincoln St. in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he lived until he left for college.
Kenny and his younger brother, Keith, spent most of their summers at the neighborhood pool, played little league baseball, shot pellet guns, and did some deer hunting.
Excelling in Boy Scouts, Kenny was only one merit badge away from becoming an Eagle Scout.
In Junior High, Kenny started playing football and throwing the shot put in the 7th grade. He was part of the Tom Browne Junior High team that were undefeated for their 7th, 8th, and 9th grade years.
Kenny lettered all three years at Mary Carroll High School in both football and track. He was elected All-District in football and won a district championship for the shot put his senior year. Kenny was very proud to be chosen by his peers as one of the Senior Football Captains. Upon graduation, he was awarded a full football scholarship to Eastern New Mexico University.
Kenny was a life-long hunter and fisherman. He hunted ducks weekly in high school. He often went to school with guns and waders in the trunk of the car, wasting no hunting time after school let out. He did more deer hunting in his early 30s and throughout the remainder of his life. In the last few years, he enjoyed annual hunts for wild hogs. He also enjoyed fishing, but most especially after moving to a home on a canal in Flour Bluff.
Kenny believed one could not have too many guns and having one more was always better. He was very serious about long-range competitive shooting and participated in monthly shoots out to 1,000 yards.
His career started as a teacher and coach, but he soon realized he could increase his income as a salesman. Kenny was gifted at relating to others and building friendships. He was creative in his sales approach, which varied according to his customers and what he was promoting.
In the summer of 1971, Kenny and his best friend, Sam Aldrich, went to Debbie Mauer’s house after she and her date went bowling. After much goading, Sam convinced Kenny to go knock on her door. Kenny and Debbie began dating and dated their entire senior year. They went their own ways to college, but reunited and married in 2000. Kenny became a husband, father of two sons, one daughter, and shortly afterwards, a grandfather (“Papa”). They were married nearly 24 years before Kenny’s sudden passing on February 10, 2024.
Kenny is much loved and will be well missed by his family and friends.
