Margaret Jean Curtiss

December 17, 1932 — October 14, 2025

Margaret “Jean” Curtiss Beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Friend December 17, 1932 – October 14, 2025

Margaret “Jean” Curtiss, lovingly known by many simply as “Grandmother,” laid her sweet head to rest on the evening of October 14, 2025, and woke in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Jean was born on December 17, 1932, in Poteet, Texas, to Ashley Bonner and Cecilia Rae Austin. She spent her early years in the small town of Campbellton, Texas, alongside her siblings Buddy and Bonnie. Her father’s job with the railroad brought unique and cherished memories, including a time when the family lived in a railroad boxcar provided by the company. Eventually, the family made their home in Odem, Texas, where Jean attended school and proudly cheered for the Fighting Odem Owls—an experience she remembered with joy throughout her life.

It was in Odem that Jean met the love of her life, Doyle Curtiss. The two married in 1951, beginning a beautiful union marked by deep devotion, laughter, and unconditional love. Together, they raised three children in a home filled with warmth, faith, and treasured family traditions.

In her early working years, Jean brought her kindness and charm to the Rexall Drug Store, working the soda fountain. Her career took a pivotal turn when a trusted mentor, Dr. Voss, told her, “You’re going to work for the bank. Go speak to the president—I’ve already spoken to him about you.” That moment launched a remarkable 35-year career at First State Bank of Odem, where she rose from teller to Vice President. Jean was admired for her integrity, dedication, and the genuine care she showed to every colleague and customer.

While she found pride in her professional accomplishments, Jean’s greatest joy came from her role as “Grandmother.” She had an extraordinary ability to make each grandchild feel uniquely loved and supported. Her warmth shone especially bright during holidays, family gatherings, and cherished summer trips to the Frio River. She was always our biggest cheerleader, strongest supporter, and gentle guiding light.

Jean taught us the value of kindness, the beauty in simplicity, and the importance of living with an open heart. She lived a life marked by her love of the lord, sincere kindness, unselfish generosity, grace, compassion and unwavering devotion to those she loves. She will be remembered for her loving spirit, her dedication to family, and the kindness she extended to everyone she met. Her life was a testimony to grace, strength, faith, and unconditional love. Through her actions and example, she has left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

She is now reunited with her beloved husband, Doyle, and is surely embraced in eternal peace.

Jean is survived by her loving children:

  • Doyle W. Curtiss and wife Anna of Corpus Christi, Texas
  • Jeffrey Curtiss and wife Sandy of George West, Texas
  • Ann Miller and husband Ray of New Braunfels, Texas

She is also lovingly remembered by her 9 grandchildren: Kelly, Angie, Justin, Scott, Matt, Whitney, Megan, Austin, and Brooke, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at 10 A.M., Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Willis Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Odem, Texas.
