Mr. John “Johnny” Lloyd Cain, Sr., of Hartselle, AL, passed away at the age of 85 on May 6, 2019 in Corpus Christi, TX. He was born in Palm Bay, Florida, and was raised in Hartselle, Alabama. He graduated from Morgan County High School, where he was a student counsel officer, a member of the National Honor Society, played basketball and quarterbacked the football team. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1956, where he earned an A. B. degree in History and Communications. In college, he served as an officer in student government and was President of the Arts and Sciences School. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity, the University Debate Team, the Debate Society, the Arnold Air Society, and the University President's Cabinet. As a junior, he was tapped into the Jason's Organization in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the University. Upon graduation, John was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force. He was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany as a Communications Intelligence Analyst and Briefing Officer, most notably working on Project Blue Book. He served in the Air Force Reserves until 1968, obtaining the rank of Captain. Upon release of active duty, he worked for Boeing in Huntsville, AL, which included hiring the scuba divers that would train astronauts for space travel and to walk on the moon. He later moved to Birmingham, AL, where he became the Director of Human Resources for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital until he retired in 1993. He married Carol Cain in 1983, and they shared a life of faithful growth, commitment, and enjoyed the blessings of many good and faithful people. They moved to Cullman, AL in 1989, and John was devoted to his church, family, and Alabama football. Together, they spent almost 30 years raising five shared children and immensely loving their grandchildren. He and Carol retired to Corpus Christi, Texas in 2014. John is preceded in death by his wife, Carol Cain; brother, Robert Cain; cousin, Jeanne Harris; and son-in-law, George Ray. He is survived by five children and stepchildren: Gina Ray, John L. Cain, Jr. (Kecia), Richard Cain, Andrew Hurd (Robyn), and Abigail Hudgins (David); his grandchildren: Oliver Ray (Kristy), Virginia Ray, Isabelle Cain, Adeline Cain, Daniel Cain, Horus Hudgins, Rory Hurd, and Emily Hurd; and one great grandchild, Calvin Ray; brother, James Francis Cain (Mary Ann), and sister-in-law, Penny Cain. He leaves behind many more relatives and treasured friends. Friends and family are welcome to attend the service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery, 9974 IH 37 Access Road, Corpus Christi, Texas, 78410, where there will be a burial with Military Honors, officiated by Barton Bailey. Funds will be combined into a Christmas gift for the wonderful employees that took such good care of John and Carol both.
