Norma L. Clopton, age 93, was born April 30, 1931, in Jeanerette, Louisiana and died September 24, 2024, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Norma grew up on a sugar cane farm with her parents and 3 brothers. She loved spending time reading anything she could get her hands on especially romance novels. This may have lead to her constantly watching Hallmark movies in her later years! Although she was close to her family, after graduating high school, she was excited to start secretarial school in Lafayette. After completing 2 years of secretarial school, Norma was off and running starting her new career.
She moved to Houston, Texas, and worked at General Electric. While working for General Electric Norma was hit with a spark, his name was Gene Clopton. When she saw Gene she said to a co-worker, “I’m going to marry that man!” Gene was fresh out of the military, with bright blue eyes, standing 6 feet tall and he was a heart throb! When Gene proposed, Norma replied “Yes, only if you go to college.” They were married September 7, 1955. They moved to Kingsville where Gene attended college.
Norma ended her career as payroll clerk at Calallen Independent School District where she retired in 1993. Coaches and teachers were often found sitting by her desk just talking to her and enjoying her happy and positive nature. After over 20 years with the district, it was rumored she had to be replaced by two employees.
Norma was married for 63 years and was blessed with 5 children. She was a very loving and protective mother. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren unconditionally. She is survived by her children Keith Clopton (Rhonda), Scott Clopton (Joe), Wanda Clopton, Randy Clopton and Robby Clopton (Kim). Norma held a special place in her heart for her grandchildren Cameron Clopton (Jasmin), Ethan Clopton (Brenna), Makynna Hood, Garrison Clopton, Amanda Jags (Sean), and Brooklynn Winkworth (Ian) and her great grandchildren Troy, Tristan, Kinley, Charlie, Alannah, Tito, Sofia and Elliot.
Our mother was an excellent cook and with five children she knew how to stretch a dollar. If gumbo or étouffée was on the menu for dinner everyone made it to the table on time! She was proud of her Louisiana heritage. Norma had a tremendous love for babies. Even a TV commercial with a baby in it would make her say, “Oh, look at that baby!” In her later years, it was the highlight of her day to scroll through the phone looking at pictures of her great grandkids.
As we gather to celebrate Norma’s life there will be a visitation for family and friends held on October 4, 2024, at 10:30am-12:30pm at Sawyer George Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 12:30pm. Graveside Service will be at 2:00pm at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery. In remembrance of Norma‘s love for the bling and the color red you are invited to wear a pop of color.
In Lieu of flowers, the family has asked for you to consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
