Otis Wilson "Buddy" Burroughs February 26, 1932 — March 21, 2026

Otis Wilson "Buddy" Burroughs, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, at the age of 94, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 26, 1932, in Seminole, Oklahoma, to Shirley Eliza and Francis Marion "Frank" Burroughs, "Buddy" lived a life of extraordinary dedication, service, and compassion that touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Otis proudly served his country with great distinction across multiple branches of the military. He began his service with the Texas National Guard, where he served for two years from 1948 to 1950. He then went on to serve four years in the United States Air Force, two of which were spent stationed on the island of Guam. His unwavering commitment to his country laid the foundation for a life of dedicated public service. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career in public education that would span 37 years. He served as the Superintendent of the Banquete School District for 33 of those years, leaving an indelible mark on the students, families, and communities he so faithfully served. The principles of education were not merely a profession for Otis — they were the guiding measure of his life. Upon retiring from Banquete ISD, Otis drew upon his extensive experience as a school administrator to serve as an Adjunct Professor at Texas A&M University — Kingsville, Texas, further cementing his lifelong dedication to education and the development of future leaders.

He was known for the gentleness, warmth, and compassion with which he approached every situation, every challenge, and every person he encountered. His steady presence and gracious spirit were a constant source of strength and comfort to those around him.

Otis and his beloved wife, Sylvia, were jointly honored with the prestigious Pioneer Historian Award, a testament to their shared commitment to preserving and honoring the history and heritage of their community.

Otis was a faithful member of the Banquete Methodist Church and a proud member of the Masonic Lodge in Robstown, Texas — affiliations that reflected his deep commitment to faith, integrity, and community.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Sylvia Anne Telford Burroughs, of Banquete, Texas; his devoted sister, Goldia Burroughs Hubert, of Riviera, Texas; his four children, William "Bill" Burroughs and his wife Lisa Burroughs of College Station, Texas, Melissa "Missy" Burroughs Johnson and her husband Frank Johnson of Richmond, Texas, Douglas Burroughs and his wife Suzanne Burroughs of Jim Wells County, Texas, and Robert "Bobby" Burroughs and his wife Wendie Burroughs of Killeen, Texas; ten grandchildren, Benjamin Burroughs, Orion Burroughs, Sylvia "Sibbie" Headington, Doug Burroughs, Xenia "Nia" Cox Burroughs, Kathy Riley, Kaitlyn Reeves, Tawni Guerrettaz, Asa Burroughs, and Addison Burroughs; and nine great-grandchildren.

Otis Wilson "Buddy" Burroughs will forever live in the hearts of his loving family and all who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of service, education, and compassionate leadership will continue to inspire generations to come.
